Internet dating is part of today’s culture. According to the 2006 Pew Internet & American Life Project’s Online Dating Survey, 1 in 10 internet users say they have personally gone to dating websites. The survey also states that 31% of American adults, 63 million people, know someone who has used a dating website, and that 15% of American adults, 30 million people, say they know someone who has been in a long-term relationship or married someone he or she met online. The survey mentions that online dating helps people find and get to know more people in less time- raising their chances of finding the right person for them. In the past, online dating has been viewed as “last resort” dating, however the survey states that public opinion about online dating has shifted- 61% of online adults have a positive view of online dating.

“Having used numerous internet dating services over the years I felt they all left something to be desired,” says WhoNeedsCupid.com founder Ash Gilpin. “I found many of the sites difficult to navigate and convoluted with unneeded bells and whistles. I thought, if only someone would put together a site that is fun, safe, secure, free and easy to use, then we have really got something! So that’s what WhoNeedsCupid.com is all about.”

Mashable, an internet news and social media organization, cites 5 big trends in the internet dating scene. First, that more “hook ups” are possible thanks to online dating. People can get to know more people in less time, and in today’s hurried world is a plus. Second, more niche markets are being created- from sites that serve those with like interests. Looking to meet a fellow sci-fi fan? Try Trek Passions. Someone passionate about the environment? Check out GreenFriends.com. Whatever you can think up – the niche is out there. The third trend is ethnicity.

There are many sites dedicated to ethnic- specific dating, from interracial connections to religions affiliations, it is all about finding exactly what you are looking for at the click of a mouse. Another trend is the proliferation of “non-date dating sites”. Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking sites function not only as a way to stay connected with friends and family, but they also facilitate internet dating. The last trend cited by Mashable is the use of websites to bring groups together like Classmates.com for example. People can use these sites to get together with those they have something in common with, or use to find out more about a prospective someone. Then meet the person offline.

“Online dating today has become a widely accepted way of finding that special someone, without the worries of the bar scene,” cites Mr. Gilpin. “One of the biggest trends in online dating today is free online dating, in an easy to navigate site. The days of complicated dating sites with long forms to fill out and hidden fees and gimmicks are over.”

Looking for that special someone? Give internet dating a try. Your Mr. or Ms. Right could be just one click away from reality. Millions of people are online right now searching for their soul mate, and many have found their perfect match.
